Hi all,
does anyone know if male fighters can be kept with small shrimps?

I have a 30L shrimp tank set up with a mixture of shrimp like cherry, blue, green, and algae shrimps, plus some neons and rosabara fish too....any good?

The tank came with a small heater, filter and light.....only thing that worries me is that there is not enough oxygen.....?? my reasons for asking about the beta is that ive got to move him from my larger 3ft tank as i have a female so wana move it soonish!!

Its been going for about 3 months so should have a good level of bacteria growing etc..

Regards

It's not advisable. Betta are known to eat shrimp, even fairly sizable ones like adult female cherry shrimp. This question has come up a few times lately and several people report poor results keeping the two in the same tank.

I know some people advise against it but i have about 20 rcs shrimp in with a betta and he seems to have given up chasing them as they are too quick (touch wood) for him as long as there is enough plant cover and hidey holes i would say it should be okay. Again though this is my experience and may be different to the general status quo so to speak

Tried it, the betta in my icon murdered them. :( Sometimes, depending on the betta, you can. But... most of the time it's a big no.

I have and do keep cherry shrimp and some native Australian shrimp with fighters and it really does depend on the fighter and I think tank size along with amount of plant life and sheer numbers of shrimp.
I had a really nice population of shrimp in a fighter sorority until the fighters decided that shrimp where yummy...the fighters had a field day hunting down the shrimp and it became a race between me with a net to rescue the shrimp and the fighters trying to scoff them.
Other solitary male fighters I have kept in community tanks of other fish with shrimp and the males have shown no real interest in the shrimp at all. I find generally veil tail fighters are more docile towards other tank mates, but that has just been my experience with a few fighters.

I would say it depends on the beta. I have a female crown tail with 3 ghost shrimp. She was inquisitive when we first put them in there, but leaves them alone now. I think they are to fast for her and she has moved on to other things. I read up on good tank mates to place with her and ghost shrimp was one of the suggestions... they did mention though, as I did, that it all depends on the beta. Each one has its own personality!
