Malayan Trumpet Snails

I've read on here before something about these snails being beneficial to a sand substrate tank as they constantly filter the sand. Are these a must in the sanded tank? Are there pro's and con's to keeping them? What about male/female ratio and breeding etc? I'm a bit freaked out by snails but if they keep the tank healthier then I'm willing to give them a go. Any thoughts and advice welcome.

They do seem to do a good job and they don't seem to eat live plants the way ramshorn snails will. But given time they can multiply to huge numbers and any food that was put in a tank especailly for bottom dwelling fish to eat the Malaysian trumpet snails race to go and eat for themselves. Because most of the time the snails will be hidden away in the sand you will only get a true indication of their expanding numbers when they come out on force to eat the food you wanted your fish to have.

Personally, if you have sand (especially if it's a compact variety), I'd always have MTS. They do a great job.

Never had any problems with them.
