I've thought about making a tank divider (initially for seperating smaller fish from the bigger ones but then for breeding) using bamboo canes - if I bind them together (so gaps are large enough for water to pass through but not large fish) would that work? Any ideas/suggestions?

Cheers
Andy

Not heard of that way before. But an easy thing to do is using some canvas enforced with some stationary plastic binders. See this thread over in the betta section to give you an idea

They also sell them pre-made. I looked into the cost of making one myself, and buying one pre-made is only a couple fo dollars more, plus I know it's made right. (If I made it and the fish got in trouble, I'd feel really bad!) :(
I think though you'd just have to be careful that it didn't get dislodged, and that the bamboo didn't rot.

Ah ok, well here in the UK, the cost difference is huge ! You are looking at around £10 for a premade divider - as opposed to £3 (at most) for a home made one

Really!?! wow! I wish it was that cheap here. If you buy one piece of plastic mesh, the aquarium silicone, and 1 pack of binders, you'll spend almost $8. At PetSmart they have dividers (for a 10-gal) for $6.98-$10. If it's that much cheaper over there, no wonder you do it yourselves!

That's excluding silicone. Unless it's a really big tank, it really does not need to be siliconed permanently.
