ok for some of you riccia growers, i think this might be better than airline tubing method and most tubs.

a sheet of this mesh will cost about $0.25 at your local Wal-Mart or any store that carries sewing supplies. Its a sewing grid. Now alot are asking how the heck is this not going to sink. Well im going to add a hanger(the piece sticking up is first part) to have it hange on my center support of tank. You can modify this to hang on the back of tank or simply silicone some airline tubing around the top. I prefer the hanging method to keep it from moving from currents. I tried the just using the airline tubing idea from guide but found i had to much of a current at of tank so I was using a tub, but was thinking it would be healthier for plant to have a steady stream of water running through it as well as ferts in tank. Looked over and saw some extra mesh from making filters and light when on in head. The grid is plenty small to hold the riccia (unless its a very tiny broken peice) and will allow water to run freely throught it. At the same time trapping ather riccia floating at top of tank onto its side. Ill take another pic when placed in aquarium with riccia excess inside it. What you think of this idea so far?

I think its a lot better method than setting up a tank just to grow riccia like you first suggested. I personally just dangled a net in the top of the tank for a week! I have to agree the air tubing method isn`t very good if you don`t have a lot since a lot of mine escaped when i first tried it.

The basket looks pretty big, how much have you got. Like i first suggested wouldnt u be best to just cover a smaller area with what you have and let it grow, than trying to make enough from the start to cover that large slate you made?

its small only like 2"x8" so it wont catch much light to rest of tank
