You cannot keep a single Oscar in a 45g tank, let alone 2. They require a 75g minimum for one, a 125-150g for two.

For 45g tank, your looking at the smaller species of SA cichlid, such as Rams, Keyholes, Apistogramma, sajica etc

you really need to be thinking more along the lines of smaller cichlids such as firemouths t-bar cichlids etc

Nothing wrong with the smaller cichlids, I've kept rams and they're fantastic fish - and I've got a sajica in my new setup, which is a beautiful fish.

agreed on the sajica fantastic fish ive wanted for ages. seeing yours has sealed the deal. as soon as i re-home my spirulus im getting 2 sajicas

Don't be sad. Personally I think Oscars are over rated. there are so many awesome cichlids with just as much personality as Oscars but in a smaller cutere package. I have a keyhole that is awesome he is like my little buddy. He is always there to say hi.

totally agree oscars are vastly over rated. there are plenty of smaller cichlids which are just as if not more fun to keep.

Not strictly true. You could keep a single Oscar in a 45G for about a year then you would need to go up to somthing bigger. A 75G would be ideal but over at oscarfish.com the absolute minimum reccomended is 55G (18" deep). Get a second opinion over there.

So many people must get put off keeping Oscars on this forum because of people spouting off the minimum 75G rule.

Take in to consideration that Oscars are small when you buy them and only a maniac with more cash then sense would run a 75G for a 2" fish on its own!!

Its called forward planning - not everyone has the room, time or more importantly money for a bigger tank. People on here don't give advice on here based on what might happen, they give advice based upon the facts - i.e the tank the OP has is not big enough for oscars in the long run.

So the advice given on here is completely true. If the OP had stated she planned to buy a 75G tank in a years time, people may have given the same advice you did. But she didn't - she said she's got a 45G tank. Which isn't big enough for an oscar in the long run.

If someone is going to order a bigger thank then thats a fact is it not?

My point is no one even asked or suggested to the OP that with a little forward planning they could keep an Oscar.

Unfotunately people on here dont ask or even entertain the notion that people may be "forward planning" to upgrade their tanks.

My only gripe with this forum is that some people are far to eager and sometime seem to enjoy telling people that they can not keep the fish they want and that they are doing things wrong.

This is not aimed at you tenofive just a general rant.
