Hi everyone

I think I may have screwed up my tank. After months of double zeros for ammonia and nitrite, and consistent pH and nitrate, today i did a pretty big tank clear out. Nitrates have also been steady at 40 - 80 ppm, pH 7.4, temperature 25 degrees. I use an API freshwater master test kit.

Having had a bad start with no proper advice (before i found this forum) and probably a fairly severe fish-in cycle, I also wasn't really gravel vacuuming or changing water enough.

So this afternoon I put the fish in another container for a while, took all the ceramic gravel (the main bio-media) out and rinsed it in old tank water Filter sponge was given only a quick swish out in the old water. Pretty much all the water had to come out because there was LOADS of poo and gunk in there. It is only a 35 litre tank, so it wasn't too bad. After all my being careful about rinsing the gravel in old water and temperature matching, I refilled put the gravel bad and refilled... and THEN dechlorinated. Have I killed all my good bacteria after being so careful about it?

I retested the water ten minutes after I finished, my log says 2.20 pm. I just realised all this when I woke up in a panic a few minutes ago so I have just retested at 2.04 am - pretty much twelve hours after the fish went back in. Ammonia and Nitrite are still reading as 0, but is this just the calm before the storm? No point in testing for nitrates, as tap water is 40 ppm anyway - generally it says under 80 ppm even after a week.

All the fish (5 guppies, 3 neon tetra) seem to be behaving as normal, although I can't see one neon - but he could just be hiding.

Am I going to end up in a fish-in cycle again, do you think? Because if so I will be straight to the LFS in the morning to beg for some mature media... any advice gratefully received!

I think you should be okay. Sounds like you put the dechlor in after but more or less immediately after filling? That is probably fine. There is some ability to vary this. When I refill my tank after a water change, I put the dechlor in the tank and then fill from the hose for example.

However, it is possible after a major cleaning that you trigger a mini-cycle so keep an eye on the water stats daily for at least a week to make certain you are in the clear.
:good:

Thanks Karin, that is reassuring - that was a bit of a sleepless night!

7.30 am tests (17 hours after screw up) show 0 ammonia and 0 nitrite, so maybe it isn't too bad... I'll keep doing daily tests to be sure though.

All fish swimming normally and looking happy, and third neon was just hiding.

Generally speaking, if you didn't kill the bacteria in the filter - which it seems you didn't - you could put the filter in a brand new tank as it still carries all the beneficial bacteria in it. You should be absolutely fine! You need to dechlorinate the water to get everything out of it! It won't hurt to watch it though but you haven't done anything wrong as you cleaned the filter in tank water!

changing and deep cleaning substrate, can cause a mini cycle, even if you leave your filter alone.

I did a big clean of my Persian Killi tank last night and just to give the fish and my worries some insurance, I used 5x the standard dose of Seachem Prime, just in case the cleaning released some nasty toxins.

Thanks guys for the comments and reassurance. I will continue testing every 24 hours until Sunday, then if all is well, will resume regular routine of 30% water change with gravel vac and dechlorinating in the bucket!

Just did another test - pH 7.4 (as usual), ammonia 0, nitrite 0, nitrate 40 (tap water comes out at 40 as well). Hopefully this will continue for the rest of the week.

In other news the tank water is absolutely crystal clear and the fishies are looking beautifully colourful and are swimming happily and behaving normally :good:
