hello i have a question about these guys. will or can they mate with normal mollies, platies, balloon mollies? i noticed my male balloon mollie has the same type of tail as the lyretail. Thks.

They sure can. I have a platinum molly that had fry not long after she came home from the LFS. Four of the fry are lyretail - must have been the daddy.

they can mate with any other type of molly :D

Sorry did you put platys there? Did you mean platinum molly as above or an ACTUAL Platy because they can't hybridise with those...but any type of molly is fine.

ahhhhh so then my female balloon mollies can get pregnant by him LOL. should be interesting to see what would come of it. would they be black like him or is it taken from the mom genes?

that male Lyretail is black, my females i have gold dust females, orange balloon and dalmation balloon mollies in there

yes i think so HEHE. and i can't wait!
one of my female platies has droped from over night and i've collected 9 so far, i hope they were from the blue male platy, that would be interesting to see the colour. the mom is a red wagtail :)

her first batch are about 2-3 months old still the size of a grain of rice.. but they have turned orange like the mom, so i guess that was from the other male platy i had in there (who is now died).

At 2 to 3 months old they should be much bigger than a grain of rice. My 4 week old molly fry are about 3/4 inch long and larger around than a grain of rice. Like you say its kind of neat how they color up when they are very young. I would suggest you get those fry some good fry food if they are growing that slowly.

i'm not sure why they are not growing as fast. they are 3 months maybe more now. They are in a 10gal tank.

Are they being fed regularly (3-4 times per day?) I ask this, as my Swordtail fry are bigger than a grain of rice at 4wks old with orange colour and black tail markings.

Brineshrimp (baby) are recommended. :good:

(It may be the size of your tank/water type)

i feed them twice a day (morn-night) with crushed down fake flood only.

I've read that you're supposed to feed fry much more frequently than adult fish. 4 times a day at least. 4-6 times is recomended, but small portions. As mentioned above brine shrimp and bloodworms are good supplements, as long as they are crushed/ground enough for the fry to eat.

You could try feeding them more often. I'd be interested to see what happens:)

I currently am awaiting a platy fry load:) Can't wait to see the tiny buggers! haahha
