ok well it's not the 55g I wanted to start an african tank (check out bichir thread in oddballs) but it was free and it's just the tank so far, gotta work on lighting and filtration and heating, and fish, but I got a free 30g when i went down to my uncles house for tanksgiving, he used to keep fish ages and AGES ago, so this tank is like 20 years old, but I will be testing it for leaks and then onward with the progress of setting up ANOTHER tank, boy have I got MTS bad, only thing is I wasn't planning on this tank so I don't even know where to start as far as stocking goes (I like to plan BEFORE I get so this is going to be odd but who can turn down a free tank, guess I'll have time to think about it while I scrounge up money for a filter and heater and lights for it.) I'm open to any thoughts you guys may have by the way... what would you do with a 30g tank? (I've already got barbs and rasporas and cories and a ram in a 20g tank and swordtails, white skirt tetras, cories, otos in a 29g o yeah and the plan is to get a single figure 8 and he'll be in a 10 gallon after the holidays (is 10 gallons ok?))

Go with Gouramis.  I have one Pearl and one Opaline in my 29 gallon, and they've made a beautiful addition...they were exactly what I was looking for...a nice-sized fish that is very active and very colorful.

You could also go with some other types of Tetras...I highly recommend Serpaes, Silvertips, or Bloodfins.

And for the bottom, you could try some small Loaches, like Kuhlis.

The first thing I would do is visit a hardware store for a tube of Silicone 1 and a razor blade and start resealing. :)

gouramis do sound like a good idea, I was planning on doing a dwarf or 2 in my 20g but then I fell in love with the german ram at my LFS, so that definetly sounds like a good idea, cichlids? do you mean african cichlids? I don't want to do africans just because I don't think it's a big enough tank for them, I'd rather save a bit and get like a 75g and do some intraquite (sp?) rock work and such and then get africans. So I'm thinking densly planted tank with groumais and tetras, and cories, and a few khulis and go from there (I stayed up late just imagining what I could do with this tank; I always do my best thinking while I'm laying in bed supposed to be sleeping) well we'll see where it goes, anymore ideas?

hmmm, its not really big enough to do a nice cichlid sett up..... but... im not so great at planning ahead, i usually need to see the fish, think and research, then buy. it helps ;)
