Lost First Fish Whilst Doing Fish In Cycle ,what Could Have Caused It/

I do not know how that product you have highlighted works.

The two I have told you about will not effect the cycling process, they simply change the toxic poisons into a non toxic form. The ammonia and nitrite are still there for use by the bacteria in the filter but are no longer toxic to the fish.

The Seachem website I linked explains it all to you.

Your water test kit may well still detect the ammonia and nitrite in the water, that depends upon the test kit, get yourself an ammonia alert unit too.

Hi PJPJ ,thanks for that,this is what the ammonia remover does ,it changes ammonia to ammonium,which isn`t harmful ,but i`ve been advised by the forum to stay away from any chemical helpers !

Ammonium is harmful, just not as harmful, ammonia however will still be present, it's just that the ammonia - ammonium equilibrium will shift towards the ammonium side.

Aaaargh!! It`s a complicated business sure enough,but i`ll follow it as really upsetting to see dead fish in your tank ,just wish i`d known beforehand about this forum!

Honestly though, if I were in your situation my preference would be:

1. take them all back and do a fishless cycle, or
2. take all back except the tetras, and do a fish-in cycle with fewer fish.

Oh and, take whatever the fish shop says with a large pinch of salt until you can do your own research.

I was under the impression that a water change doesn't stress the fish out...

As far as increasing the oxygen in the water... lower the water level a bit, so that the water coming out of the filter cascades down a bit... more surface agitation.
