A friend of mine and I are looking to repurpose a 125 US Gallon tank (5'x2'x2') to be a South American biotype tank. All native plants and fish for a South American river. Does anyone have a favorite?

I'm thinking Negro, Orinoco, Madeira, but am very open to suggestions. Ultimately we will need to focus on a river with species we can readily acquire in the aquarium trade, as well as plants to match.

My personal favorite apisto is cacatuoides, but agassizi are nice too.

We are figuring that we can add at least two large shoals of dither fish, two trios of apistos and possibly a shoal of cories. We want it to be colorful enough to grab student attention, but authentic enough to be useful as a teaching tool regarding ecosystems.

We hope so. We are in the initial planning phase, and are looking to have it set-up in late August, just in time for the new school year. That will give us plenty of time to work out the summer maintenance schedule between the two of us. (By the way, we are both science teachers in a high school. I forgot to mention that in the OP!)

I would definitely go with Cacatuoides. Grab some wild caught ones if you can! I received some the other day and they are beautiful!

Do you know what river they originate from? And, do you know any other fish that are from that same river?

They are from the Amazon River Basin. Things that are found in that area would be Discus, Angels, (I believe Neon Tetras), I also think Borelli's Apisto are found there as well. Google it.

Sounds interesting :) For me my I think I would go for the Xingu or Tocantins

These links are your friends :)
