A tenant who recently moved out left behind a fish tank with six fish in it. It is a small tank - I think it must be about 30 litres. There was no heating or filtration but there was an air stone. After a bit of research I think there are 3 cherry barbs and 3 plecos. I have taken responsibility for the tank and added a filter and heater, but I am concerned about the plecos as it would seem that these are going to grow very large and I am amazed that someone has put three together. They are currently about 3-4". This has prompted me to rekindle an old interest in tropical fish and I am currently cycling a new 125 litre tank, which is about as big as I have room for. Will this be big enough for the current fish and allow me to add others or should I try to find some other way of dealing with these plecos?

I would get rid of the plecs if you're not 100% sure that they are the dwarf kind, by the sound of the other owner I would guess they are common, and can grow to 1ft and more. If you do set up the bigger tank, try and add more cherry barbs. Once the plecs are gone, you have the basis for a nice stocked community tank with the barbs if you want.

Thanks. They look like the common ones I've seen pictures of. Do you have any advice as to finding a home for them. I'm in the Bristol area.

Post them on the sale and swap forum :good:

Thanks I'll try that.

How many more barbs should I get? Once the new tank is cycled should I put the current and new ones in at the same time?

Sorry for all the questions, but I think I should probably make a bit more of an effort than the previous owner!

It would be fine to add both togeter, or one group first, then the second. Personaly, I would go with all in one. Cherry barbs shoal in times of stress, and moving is very stressful for them. IMO, putting them all through the move in one go makes both groups confier, as they can lean on eachother for support. This is only my opinon though.
