I currently have a ten gallon tank that houses one White Cloud Mountain Minnow. He is the strongest fish I have ever seen, he started out with 5 buddies one year ago and they all died and about a month ago he appeared to be on the edge of death as well but has bounced back. I have a crazy desire to get a new little betta but I don't want to house it in the 2.5 gallon tank I have with no filter because I think it would do better in the ten gallon. However, I do not want to remove the White Cloud from its home either. I have considered keeping them together in the tank. There is enough room for them both but I don't want either of them to be attacked. Is it likely that they will get along? What should I do?

TBH it would benefit your minnow , to add more minnows rather than a betta

I agree with Beth, however I have a betta with my shoal of white cloud minnows.

I am a little nervous that he will not handle the addition well. But White Clouds are supposedly peaceful. Right now he does a lot of hiding unless he doesn't realize I am in the room and comes out for food.

Add a couple more minnows, give it a month and then you should be able to add a betta. He will be hiding as he is a shoaling fish and should be with others such as him. Add 4 more x

Alright. I'll be adding some more minnows soon. Thanks!

Coolios, let us know how you get on. You should notice that he will become happier and out in the open more, with others of his kind. Let them bond, then add the betta x ohhhh and lots of PHOTOS PLEASE lol

I wouldnt keep a betta and WCMM in the same tank. WCMM are sub tropical and like temps between 18-22 but will for short periods live in warmer water where as bettas like temps of about 28C which WCMM really wont appreciate.

Why do you think so many bettas in shoops get ill when in un heated tanks. They are more prone to illnes. I would recommend between 26-30C 22 is way to low.

Bad water quality, stress, tiny tubs are hard to keep an even temp. In those things, the water them would be around 16c if that, 30c is too high for a betta

I disagree ive kept them at that temp for longer than ive heard of anyone keeping one at 22c. I know alot of people that keep them and most keep them and there's very few that keep them lower than 26C. I know quite a few breeders aswell and all will tell you about 28 is ideal.

A betta and white clouds are not ideal tank mates. Aside from the risk of fin nipping from the minnow, the minnow should also be living in a much larger group of its own species and ideally should have a larger tank. Plus, the minnow should be kept at about room temperature (about 20-23C) and the betta should be kept in warm tropical water at about 27C.
