Right i already have a male better in my big community tank but i want another!! will have to saty in a seperate tank on his own tho.. question is! what is the smallest tank that i could put him and him only in? and could i get away with not having a filter and a heater? just wondering atm but please let me know asap about the smallest and cheapest set up i could have to house one!!

its a crowntail im wanting!! my current betta is a veil :good:

Um...what kind of fish is your betta in with in the community tank?

Once again, male bettas are solitary fish

Most people would say a 1 gal is the smallest...but I think 2.5 gal should be the smallest they can be kept in comfortably. Depending on the size of the tank and whether or not you can keep the tank a constant temp, then you don't need a heater. If you have a larger tank, and the temp is constantly flucuating, then you need a heater. You won't be able to fit a filter into a 1 gal bowl. You don't need a filter, anyway

I don't mean to come off rude, but it sounds like you want a small bowl for it anyway

I agree with Socalmom, a 2.5G minimum would be better but I prefer to keep mine in a 5G+. I'd recommend getting a heater, that way you can keep the temperature at a constant. A filter isn't needed as long as regular water changes are done but again, I prefer to keep mine in a filtered tank.
Maidenhead Aquatics do a 7.5G tank for about £40, includes light, heater, thermometer and a couple of plastic plants. It's a beautiful tank and your Betta would love it!

he is in a divided tank atm with a platy!! seems very happy and never had any probs with him

dont want a small tank for the new one just wondered what the smallest tank possible would be but also wanting the fish to be comftable and happy.. he will be on his own so dont want a massive tank but just really wanting a definate size on a tank that would be suitable for one male betta but not make him unhappy

Oh...well you said community, not divided lol

If you don't want anything huge, anything from a 2.5 gal to a 5 gal is a good size :good:

and he would be oook with it just planted etc with no heater or filter?? i plan to get a massive tank eventually divided so i can have all my fish in it!! its just for now really!!! i love male bettas! there so good looking and nice to watch!

Wait...what?

Well, he would need a heater, but not a filter

Is that what you asked?

You really do need a heater for the tank, constant swings in temperature will afeect your Betta.
As for the filter, it is better to have one but if you choose not to thenm you need to keep on top of the water changes.
Plants are a must as he'll like somewhere to shelter and hide away. You could also try putting a small ornament or some hollowed out rock in there so he's got somewhere to swim through.

ill use a heater!! around 27ish degrees c yeah?? and will use plants and i like to use appropriate slate to create a tunnel sort of structure like in my big tank, think i will get another now!! shame he cant be in the big tank like but will be able to eventually!!

27C will be fine, that's what temperature I keep my boys at. Be careful if you use slate as it can have sharp edges and end up damaging his fins.
I have a Fluval 800 which is about 24G divided into 4 for my boys, fully filtered and heated. They love it in there. Just need to pester my better half to make me another one now! :hyper:

thats what my community tanks at!! they all seem fine:) im really up for keeping another betta on its own as i love them!! cant wait till i can have them all together but divided!! but im sure another one will be ok on its own for now!!

cheers for the advice btw :good:

He'll be fine on his own, Bettas are a solitary fish and prefer to be kept in a tank by themselves.
Sounds like you've been bitten by the Betta bug, you'll soon end up with more than one!
Good luck! :good:

oh exactly, i think that is best way for bettas enjoy their life!
Thanks for sharing!

Some great advice has already been given :good:

Although I'm just going to remind you that you'll have to add some water conditioner to the betta's water to make it safe and get a test kit for the water before just putting one in the tank.

Good luck!
