I had a school of rummynose and all but 1 died. I really don't want to try them anymore, I went through so many tetras, and they brought ick into my tank and all sorts of other stuff so I'm just asking if my surviving rummynose will be ok on his own? There are serpae tetras in the tank will he try to school with them? I'm thinking of eventually getting a tank just for rummies and then I'll try getting a school of rummies again, but it doesn't look like that can happen anytime soon. Any input is appreciated!!!

They should be kept in groups of 6+, if you aren't willing to do that then I'd suggest re-homing it.

When these fish brought ick into your tank, did you quarantine them?

No, I do not have a quarantine tank, mostly because I don't have the money for one, but I personally feel that it is very stressful on the fish to go from the breeder's tank to the store's tank to the quarantine tank and then to my tank, thus lowering the fish's immune system considerably.. Just my two cents though. I always closely inspect my fish before purchasing though, and neither the rummies or any other fish in the store had signs of ick at the time. I guess all I can do it rehome him then. Sad cause I've taken a strong liking to him.

Rummies are by FAR my favorite freshwater schooling fish, but they are a bit too much for me right now.

Ick can be brought on from stress I think?..from transferring from the store to your home tank.

You wouldn't plop them in the quarantine tank, then net them out, and put them in yours. You leave them there for a certain amount of time.

Two weeks is usually enough for any symptoms to arise but some people wait longer than that.

I mention a QT because you would have less chance of these things happening if using that method. Not trying to be rude or anything. :)

It's all good! I didn't take it as rude. Maybe once I get some more funds I'll get a qt tank running. Luckily it was just a little ick though which is easily cured with some heat!
