ive just been to my local pets at home to try and find a reflector for my lighting, and they must have had a delivery this morning because there was all the bags floating in the water, and out of curiousity i went to see what they had! nothing really caught my eye! but they all, except for two, looked really healthy in the bags, only two dead ones, an angel and a guppy! was quite suprised! were some beautiful guppies, not new ones in bags, just some in one of the tanks, must have been from over the weekend, if they werent pets at home ones i may have been tempted to pick them up! all the lights were off, and they were in there at least half an hour floating before he even started letting them in! was remarkably impressed that he actually knew what he was doing! im not saying its gonna make me buy my fish from there, but it wasnt as bad as i thought it would be! that was the warrington branch, just incase anyone was interested in which store it was!

With somewhere like Pets at Home there are 2 hints really (that may seem contradictory)

Fish - If you see one you like let them keep it for a while, let it settle, let it get its colour and then after a month or so you will know it is OK and that it hasn't been diseased (about as much as you can tell) In my local the have some German Blue Rams (lots of different names for these) and because they're £7.49 each no-one is buying them and for the first week or 2 they didn't have any colour. 2 months I am quite surprised that they are still alive after seeing so many dead fish in other tanks. These rams have fully coloured up so they must be settled and relaxed and they have lasted over a week without dying of whitespot or other illness which is a rarity. Therefore myabe these might be a good buy!!

Plants - The exact opposite. Pets at home have food, water, heat and filtration which is enough to keep a fish alive for a few days with no knowledge until som 5 year old with a 10 Ltr tank can buy the plec they've been eyeing up for 10 minutes. They have no plant knowledge and their cascades are not the correct lighting for plants but: The plants are good Tropica plants and if you can get the on the day of arrival or as close too then you will get a bargain at £9 for 3, although they only have the commonest plants Tropica plants are usually much more expensive. After a few days in the P@H cascade they are damaged, blackening up, dying off etc.

My local P@H is absolutely appalling when it comes to fish. Always multiple dead fish in every tank, staff haven't got a clue, stock is nothing more exciting than guppies, mollies, platies, tetras and the odd gourami

 Better just sticking to lfs's for fish and plants

I have to say that my local Pets At Home has quite a nice selection of fish, It's just the knowledge of some of the staff that let it down.

it's hit and miss really...

i went to the nottingham one late last year and the member of staff i got talking to there was actually very helpful, knew her stuff and you could tell she had quite a passion for fish keeping. However last month there was a school leaver assisting customers that didnt have a clue and was guessing answers to very simple questions from customers.
