The reason you were probably told to remove the carbon was because carbon can also remove nutrients the plants need. And this is especially true for reef tanks, the carbon removes a good deal of trance minerals and such that many reef inhabitants need. If you add these things, having the carbon won't really matter all that much, as it can not remove everything, but it's still probably best to skip it unless specifically needing it (ie to remove meds etc).

I know. I mentioned that first (in relating to the plants in the previous post). I only mentioned marine set ups because the issue of carbon is much more "important" there than in freshwater. Many corals are much more expensive and relatively rare compared to the plants we put in aquariums. If I were to make a mistake, I'd rather "starve" a plant than my corals...
