bought a live plant from my LFS, didn't take notice of what the name of it was and now it seems to be dying..... going brown and 2 leaves have fallen off....

Help???

(apologies if this is in the wrong section)

Can you post a picture? What does it look like?

Hmm.. it could be amazon sword or some sort of anubius. If it's amazon sword, you need to get root tabs because they are heavy root plants. And if it's an anubias, it's rotting because either you haven't tied the roots to a rock or wood (they can't be planted), or because they're still acclimating, so they're "melting". Anubiases don't like to be moved. Kinda like my fat cat xD. Though I could probably help you better if you had a picture, but I hope I helped anyway :)

Not sure what rachcake's plant is. It's probably better if we can see an actual picture of the plant you have. Other than that I'd say it could be a species of hydrophila.

BamBeckham's plant looks like java fern trident.

It won't harm the fish and most fish don't touch java fern, not the most tasty of plants :)
In terms of cycling, it's a slow grower. You'd rather combine it with faster growing plants. As far as I know, java fern likes lots of phosphates, so it has it's own benefits.
