Hi Guys,

LFS sell 'tropical lionfish' I beleive this are actually better known as Toadfish and prefer brackish water. Is this correct?

problem being I have bought one as a tropical lionfish and added it to my chiclid freshwater tank. Will this guy survive? He didnt take anything when tank fed tonight (he only went in yesterday) is my tank not really the best place for him? Darn those LFS and there vague discriptions of fish!!

Would adding salt to my water making him more comfortable?? would this damage my other fish?

Should I take him back or will he get on in my tank I only want to keep him if its ok for him, if he is going to struggle and die in a few weeks then id rather take him back

Any advice???? anyone kept one in a freshwater sucessfully?

Take a look on google, is it allenbatrachus grunniens ?

In which case I'd be worried about your cichlids, and it's venemous, so dont touch it!

I managed to get a pic of him can anyone id which kind of toadfish he is??

Hi

My advice is take him back to your LFS. I had the same Toad Fish and as Fella said they are venomous, they will eat your other fish if small enough and he needs to be in Brackish. I started mine of (when he was small) in 1.005 salinity and then when he got bigger in 1.010 salinity. Also they eat prawns and cockles ect. defiantly no flake food

It looks almost like a fish we catch in local Brackish structure called an "Oyster Toad Fish". Man those things are NASTY! but I lovem lol. They have lots and lots of teeth like a sharks rows, anybody willing to unhook one without pliers has my commendation as a brave soul. I tried one in a brackish aquarium for a short period, but it seemed very unhappy, so I released him back to the same structure of barnacle laden cinder blocks where I caught him at. Definately one cool specimen, who deserves respect!

EDIT: Before I released mine, he ate anything he could get his teeth on, including one HELL of a tough old Lousiana Crawfish named carl  .

Hey s3, where yat? I'm in BR and would love to know if there other brackishdudes around here.

Yes, it's a member of the Batrachoididae, could be anything though species-wise as they are all very, very similar. Nocturnal, primarily marine, rarely brackish water. Predatory. Grow large. Much studied by biologists because of their noise-making abilities. Some species are venomous. Easy enough to keep in an aquarium, but not particularly rewarding because they don't do much and can't really be kept with anything other than substantially larger tankmates. In aquarium will eat all kinds of live foods such as river shrimps and earthworms, or may be weaned on to dead foods such as whitebait. As ever, if you are going to use live feeder fish, breed your own *livebearers* and do not use rosy-red minnows, goldfish, or anything bought as feeders from your pet store (unless you want your toadfish to get sick and die).

Cheers, Neale
