I know the rule about stocking can be bent and that's why I'm asking for suggestions.

I have a 10 gal tank, it will be lightly to moderately planted. I want school of tetras (what type would be best) and albino cories. Should I do 6 of each? Can I push it to 10 of each?

Tetras can be quite active and I would recommend around 20gal for them.

The only thing I would recommend is a betta.

I was just thinking betta. I could do a single betta, cories and maybe some cherry shrimp?

The betta might eat the shrimp. But the betta and cory should be fine together. Do you have a sand substrate?

What is the 10 gallon in liters? The 10 gallon tag seems to vary between 33 liters and 64 liters which is quite a big difference.

If its in the middle upwards you could do quite a nice tank like

8 Green Neons or 8 Ember Tetras
8 Pygmy Cories or 6 Panda Cories

And maybe a few cherry shrimp or similar small shrimp species?

Yes it will have a black sand substrate. I'm completely rehauling my tank as all my fish have phased or been given away.

In my opinion a 10 gallon is too small for 6 albino corys, they get to 3" you could possibly have 5 pandas at a push

I second this. You're gonna need a 15g for any cories that aren't either pygmy, dwarf or panda.
