hi there my HB limias are only small still they range in size from about 2cm-3.5cm and one of the females is now pregnant
Do i have to keep a special eye on here cos she is so young or wil she just give birth to a smaller than normal batch , also how long is their gestational period .

They are currently being fed on live bloodworms twice a week , frozen daphnia or brine shrimp once a week then alternating - spirulina , algae wafers , brine shrimp flake and guppy colour flake .
Is theyre anything else i could supplement them with to maintain there health .

Thanks Sarah xx

she will give birth to a smaller number of fry than normal.
gestation period can take as long as 10 weeks/depending on temperature Best temp-for them is about 76f.

your feeding them a good variety of foods. some good live foods that is easy to keep and culture. are micro worms, Grindal worms, & white worms,

make sure your tank is well planted for the fry to hide. it is best to put the female in a small planted tank on her own to give birth.

Hi

This is a species I breed. In my experience a small female like yours will probably give birth to around 6 - 10 small fry. They do occasionaly munch their fry, so the addition of some floating plants and big, thick bunches of cabomba or a similar plant will help to reduce fry loss.

Incidentally, this species needs to have some vegetable matter in it's diet to remain healthy. Your varied diet sounds good. The fry will grow rapidly if fed on banana worms, micro worms, small grindal or white worms of suitable size. Crushed vegetable flake or even very finely chopped lettuce is also taken. Mine also eat frozen artmia, daphnia, bloodworm, cyclops and chopped earthworm. Basically, they're really not fussy and will eat pretty much anything!

Make sure the water doesn't drop below a ph of 7 as they don't do very well in acidic water. Better still aim for somewhere around the 7.5 mark.

You'll have no problem rehoming the fry. :)

All the best

Jarcave, I hate to hijack this but do the limias also take live daphnia or are the daphnia too big for them? I saw that you used frozen and just wondered. I am keeping some limia melanogasters and just am not sure what to feed them. They are taking the growth formula that I use but what else would help them prosper?

limia melanogasters will eat all of the foods that has been mentioned above
they will eat frozen daphnia or live. try some live daphnia your fry will eat it if it fits in their mouths

Are you talking about baby limias? Or full grown ones?

I have both, the trio that I received and some of their fry. I have a few endlers in with them just so the tank wouldn't look so empty. It seems like it helped the limias get used to seeing fry and they have not been eating their own so far.

she's not given birth yet but she is now very large and beginning to square off she's also developed a large gravid spot and is hiding a lot so i should think in the next week or so she'll drop :)
