 i`m just very curious,if you put your lights on ,say 7 in the morning, leave them on for approx 10 hours, and work full time, when do you see your tanks lit up,or does it make no difference if you leave the lights off in the day and put them on evening instead,

Depends on lighting conditions where your tank sits and also what plants etc are in your tank?

mine is switch on about 7.30 ish and turned off around about 8ish some times a bit later, all seem well. i plan to get some small blue led's to light the tank in the evening so i can see the fish but the fish will think is darker.

Personally I have mine on a timer. On for about two hours in the morning (while I'm in the house and can see them better) and then again on in the evening when I return home for about 4-5 hours.
More light = more algea growth. Less artificial light doesn't bother fish one bit and means less algae cleaning :good:
(of course if you have plants that require high light, check planted section for more advice. I only keep Java fern and it's fine)

I have mine on for 5 hours straight (timer) this is the time usually when i am able to get in and see my fish, They are in a shed in complete darkness. I have no plants (live) so no light is needed. the fish care not if they have light or dark. the light is for me only. However the fish do get used to the light timings as they know its feeding time :)

I have mine on a timer 11am - 11pm so i get to see them in the evenings.

It used to be 10-10 but i was too lazy to change the timer when the clocks changed

I have a little switch in the tank set on a rock.

The fish turn the lights on and off as they like ;):good:

ive got lots of pants so mine are on from 7:00am..till about 9:00pm- sometimes later, it depends whether im in school or not

ours is on a timer too, couple of hrs in the morning so i usually check the tank before i go out to work, make sure there's no major disasters going on! then they come back on around when we get home from work and go off at about our bedtime.

Don't see the connection?............oh it's a typo

my timer comes on at 3.00pm goes off at midnight. got a few live plants. dont really have any probs.

Unless you have live plants or your tank is positioned in a basement or some other room with no windows there is no need to switch the lights on apart from when you want to watch the fish, the fish will get all the light they require just from the light in the room from a window.

I only put the lights in my fish house on when i am in there apart from a 11w bulb on the ceiling which comes on via a timer an hour before dusk and goes off at 9pm during the winter months so that i can still feed the fish properly in the evenings without disrupting their day/night patterns.

I'm confused because my fish are in a room with a skylight and 3 full length french windows so it's about as bright as a room can get without being outside but when i go away for a couple of days and leave the lights off even if i come back during the day all the fish have lost their colour and are dopey. It doesn't matter how much light they get during the day they only fully wake up when the tank light is on!
