ive just noticed the light tubes we have in our tank (it was all second hand) say "marine white" on the boxes for them, does this matter that were keeping tropical ? or is the lighting all wrong ?

There's no 'wrong' lighting unless you need a specific type to grow whatever plants you may have. If the light is pleasing to you then all is well.

Unless you are growing plants, the lighting in your tank only serves to provide light for you to view your fish. If you have a planted tank, make sure that the light tubes are of 10000K or less in their spectrum. That will mean that your lights are able to support typical plants in terms of wavelength.
