Fish Fanatic
I have a 6 ft, 135 gal (US) tank that I've set up and cycled. It has a 175w metal halide and 2x 52w T5s. I don't plan on having a ton of plants, maybe just a few big ones. Fish will most like be a large number of community fish.
My question is, when and for how long should I have my lights turned on? I have a timer so I would like to be able to set it up so it is consistent. I plan on having the lights on for 8 hours, maybe a bit less.
Here is my dilemma, I usually go to work early in the morning at around 8am or in the afternoon until around 9pm. Ideally I would like to be able to feed twice a day, but if I turn the lights on in the morning, I won't be able see the fish when I get home (I work 8 hours). If I let the timer turn it on later in the day, say around 12pm, I won't be able to feed in the morning.
Could I just have the timer go on early in the morning for 4 hours, have it turn itself off and then on again at around 6pm? Or would that completely stress out the fish and plant photosynthesis? Another way could be just to hope the fish will eat early in the morning in the dark.
