Light Cycles

Hi fellow fish friends --- I am breaking in a new tank, and started with 20 gold fish feeder types. My question is - should there be a tough regiment of timing of the lights - like the on and off cycle being timed to precision. What is a good length of time to illuminate one's tank. Is it season based or just a 12 - 12 cycle.
