Light Blocking

I am currently fishless cycling my tank & to reduce the algea growth i have decided to black it out completely.

I have blacked it out with a cut up bin liner & some masking tape.

Will this work & more to the point will it effect the cycle?

To take an educated guess, id say that bacteria need some light to grow and reproduce. All I do to cut algae growth is I never turn my tank light on, just normal day light is the only light my tank gets.

Seeing as algae are encouraged by light + ammonia, you are doing the right thing in blocking out the light, also the bacterium we are trying to encourage do better in the dark

I am by no means an expert, but I would imagine light isn't an issue for bacteria, how much light will an external filter in a cabinet beneath the tank get?

In labs these types of bacteria will grow better without light than with, but overall its not a big factor as far as exposure through the filter walls is concerned. The black out business is all about further algae reduction and what will accomplish that varies wildly in different situations. WD
