USA,
So I have to return some dead fish to my lfs. They require a water sample to make sure that everything is fine. So I bring in the wrong water, water from the store that i was testing to see if it matched mine or not, and it was in the SW levels. So I said that I tested the water and it was 7.2 and something must be wrong, so i was able to have it re checked again. If it doesnt come out good you dont get your money back, which is just credit to the store. So I go back today, and they say it is off the charts again. 7.2 on the low, and 7.4 on the high, meaning it was 7.2. Well they said that that is way to high for anything but africans. So I dont get the money back. which gets me mad because 7,2 is not african water, and it is fine for the von rio tetras and blue ram, right?

ah, it gets me so mad that they are ripping me off because of how they feel about the ph of the water the fish require. I have read that 7.2 is okay for the fish. And i, as well as many of us know that 7.2 is not good for the Africans at all.

Why did they die of ph shock.

well, the kribs I think took out the tetras, as they are in breeding mood again, and I saw one eat one of the tetras.

and the ram had its tail nipped off. It was to late when I noticed it, it was all the way gone, the tetras nipped it off, which I fond odd as they never attacked the veil angels, and I know it was them as I saw it.

7.2 is too high? what the crap do they think you ought to be keeping the levels at?!? 7 is neutral!! :X "ideal" level for africans is 8.4

your LFS is insane, wrs... i bet they want to sell you a product to "fix" your pH too...

have you got a test kit? pull out about a gallon of dirty tank water and a little vinegar. slowly very small amounts of vinegar to the dirty water until the pH tests out around 6.6 or so. then take that in and see what they say.

they want it around 7. I am so mad that i dont get my money back, it is BS!

I will do that. And yes I have a test kit.

I am going to be switching to africans though, I have wanted cichlids for a while. I will be getting some things for them though to make the PH higher.

The lfs said that 7.2-7.6 is brackish water, I am not sure about that though.
and yes they did want to sell me something to change the PH, but I said I already have some. But they did think that the tap water should be 7 so that the water should be that as well. I from now on will bring they're water back, as I know that they have some stupid policies, like this one that the ph has to be 7. I know mine is fine for the fish, there is nothing wrong with 7.2!!!

Someone correct me if I am wrong, but I thought brackish water had to do with salt and not the ph level. I was under the understanding that below 7 the water is getting acidic and above 7 the water was getting alkaline. Is that not right?

That's perfectly correct.

It sounds like the store just don't want to give the credit.

Ask them to test their own water while you're there and I'll bet it's the same as yours, then they'll have no valid argument.

my mom says that as well. But I get to shy to do it, I am a very shy person, and just asking for help with the fish gets me all nervous, so I would need my mom or brother there to do it. And taht is terrible because I'm 18, but I think it is because I am short that I am shy, lol, because I am shorter than alot of people.

But I think she ment brackish water PH, not about the Ph making it brackish.

and I have tested the water of the store, some of it is really high, while others are really really low, like 6 or less, though some is 7.

i would definetaly have them test their own pH

7.2 is perfect for 90% of tropical fish we can keep in tanks. Fish adjust to pH, they just don't support radical pH change. My water is 7.6 and i keep tetras, bettas, gouramis, guppies... They're all healthy and most of my fish are laying eggs, except the tetras!

Either get them to test your water, or file a complaint to consumer protection or something. If they say 7.2 is not suitable for the fish you buy, then they shouldn't sell it to you. They should ask you for your pH before selling you anything!

thats quite a poor excuse, 1 i had used on me was i *probable* had an ammonia spike and by the time they tested it went back down.

that was when i started out so didn't know any better.

lol, paul that was a good one. I cant believe that one would be used! Oh some stores are so dumb!

I know 7.2 is okay for them, but i just dont get it about the store. I would still be buying the fish from them, as it is store credit, now I am only going to get partcial, when I know I should get full. It costs more to go there though than it did to buy the fish, with gass prices now and all.

Now, how would I go about with a complaint an all?

oh, and the store doesnt even have a return policy for an "aggressive" fish or cichlids. And i quote aggressive, because some cichlids, like firemouths are not aggressive, and they consider them to be.

yeh tis quite terrible but was only on cheap fish so I'm not fussed!!

either speak to the manager or if your like me and can't express things aswell as in an e-mail or letter then write or even phone with note pad with thoughts you want to express.

talk with the manager or owner if it's a local shop

Explain to him the situation and that you did your research and 7.2 is a fine pH for most fish. Ask him for proof if he says otherwise and bring printouts from the web that show the pH is good.

then have them test the water from the tank in which the fish you bought are from and watch them test it.

Bring your mom or brother is you feel they don't respect you. Also, as a last resort, there should be a consumer protection association in your state that would be glad to hear from you

yeah, but it was the owner and his wife that said this.

so have them test the water in front of you
and aks them where they got the info that 7.2 is only acceptable for african cichlids!

one thing you gotta learn is to stand up for yourself buddy! ;)
