So due to my weird results recently, i gathered 3 lots of water samples to take to my lovely local fish shop this morning...they were a bit busy, but there were enuff staff on. 20 mins later i got to the till and explained i was doing a fishless cycle on 3 tanks..as soon as he heard "fishless" he scowered..and said "sorry i havent time to do 3 lots of tests, we are too busy" he told me to bring them back in mid week??? hmmmmm
some ppl are soooo rude!!

get your own kit!! they may not be the most reliable but at least you won't need to put up with that!! don't get strips as they are awful! i would recommend the API Master or Nutrafin Mini Master liquid kits. have a look on ebay...you'll get one for about £20. I have the API...it lasts for ages! shame i'm away up in scotland...i'd have tested your water for you!!...unbeleivable!!

Well, to be fair, you are making them lose money… but some LFS are getting around that by charging some amount for the tests (like 1 pound per sample, for all of them).

I ahree it would be beneficial to get yourself a kit. Plus I know when i go to my lfs its kinda annoying when people are getting their tests done as the staff are not available, try going late afternoon midweek.

i have Laura... i have the API master kit..but my ammonia and nitrate have run out already..Sooooo i bought nutrafin tests....and i cant make head nor tail of the results (hense my next post)

although i agree that lsfs may lose money spending their time doing water tests, surely it is likely to benefit them in the long run if you are going to buy fish from them!! there is still no excuse for being so rude!

Wouldn't happen to be P@H would it?? Took me 20 mins to get someone to get me an air pump out a locked cabinet on one occasion and on another waited 15 mins for someone to get me plants, just gave up with them, found somewhere better.

Would be best to get your own test kit, they will be cheaper to buy on the net and they will last you for months if not a year.

That's what happens when you try to cycle three tanks at once

It bothers me somewhat that the bottle sizes for each test are the same, but the amount of drops you need to use vary greatly. You're bound to run out of one before the other. They probably do it on purpose though, so you have to buy a single pack instead of the full kit. They can charge more money that way.

+1 cezza. thats probably exactly why they make the bottles the same size!! hadn't thought of that!! they know what we need to test for more often...normally the things where more drops are required!!

yes..i am cycling 3 tanks Laura ... 3x as many drops!

and i have James fish... I HAVE TESTS!! i just wanted them to check it too...to see if theirs tallied with mine!

Sorry to steal the thread but since you guys are talking about water tests?wich ones you recommend?
I always use the ones from sera. Currently buying them every now and then. So far i only have the PH and the KH.
But i hear about the API test kit?Is it any good?read some post were people say its not very acurate.
Wich are the best test around?and wich ones are good in a money\quality relation.

As for the manners of the LFS i have no complaints in my current shop. Sometimes i do have to wait awhile to be served but that is because its a very busy shop. But they are very helpfull and always take their time with me.
But in the past i had a lot of shops that were not that nice.

What? I can't believe why some people are so rude! Wonder how they'd feel if they weren't "busy".

But yeah API testing kit- we use it at work, always seem to run out of nitrate bottle 2 before anything else though

i find it alot easier to read then the nutrafin...and ive just won a salifert Nitrate on ebay for £7..so we will see...still havent got my test tubes though...so testing my 3 tanks takes about an hour!
shame...as i found this shop alot better than P@H...BUT i did notice when they tested my water last time he never shook the nitrate bottles...hmmmm I'm shaking my bottle like mad and im getting readings of 80-160ppm or 80ppm
