I telephoned a LFS today to ask if they stocked amano shrimp and i was told they most certainly do, so as i was at work my wife went and bought them (buy 4 get 1 free) £10, when i arrived home tonight i eagerly went to see the new additions but to my dissmay they look nothing like the shrimp ive been swatting up on and infact resemble the more widely known feeder shrimp, glass shrimp.

They are about 1" in length with a semi clear body and have a fine black line running down their side (not the dotted as seen on ammano and no trace of a line on their back) they are very active and i do like them but worry about how long they actually survive as most state they only survive around a month. And if these are glass shrimp im curious to ask him why he is selling them at over £2 ea as amano .

I dont know if they are but lfs's are quite often wrong/misinformed or simply have no experience.

I wasn't aware ghost shrimp only live fror about a month. That sucks!

The lifespan of the shrimp is generally the same as Amano (2yrs) but most the lterature ive read states they rarely see it through their larger castings in a home community tank "but i dont know how true this is " they at least seem very active for now and i would certainly add more as they are on the go scavaging constantly" but for a LFS to sell them at a couple quid each is crazy when i was pointed to a suppliers that sell them as feeder shrimp 100 for £16 :look:

Ghost shrimp can apperently live much longer than 2 years from what i've read, but i've never seen any evidence.

You should take a picture of the shrimp and post it on the freshwater inverts board, because you could have a problem worse that being sold ghost shrimp............http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?showtopic=161766

B****CKS thats them or should i say 5 of them.. So they arnt very good community shrimps then lol..

Yeah, not very good community shrimp :X . However they seem like great fun to keep on their own.

For info go to the inverts board where a few people have them.

There's a very small chance they could be 'Macrobrachium assamensis ' (should be safe in a community tank) like the ones from snailshop snail shop, but i don't know. Youll have to check for yourself or post a pic :) .
