i say captive but hey

I ALWAYS buy TB when i can, and i urge others to do so too, saltwater fish are becoming rarer by the day and the barrier reef FINALLY is protected!! the worlds coral population is dwindling...FAST so fragging is very important IMO.

also denison barbs are in serious trouble and when im older im going to have a crack at breeding them, i will probably fail but at least i tried to do my bit for them.

i just feel no matter how bigger tank you have it wont be as big as the sea so they feel confined

My ornate's are wild caught, I have sucessfully breed them now in captivity, Already sold the first 10. which have gone to a renowned snakehead breeder who's put them already in a large tank where he hope's to breed them.....This should hopefully take pressure of the wild stock

i have a great deal of respect for you nelly, what you have done is a great thing, you have probably started something, with people being able to buy TB specimens instead of wild caught is a great thing :good:

It entirely depends on the species and where it's being fished.

It's not really as straight forward as this.

I usually go wild, but then again for me the challenge is to breed, not just to keep

id say my 1st preference would be f1 tank-bred my blua acara is wild which is great for the colour quality etc but it was at 1 point free and wild. with f1 you get as near to a wild fish as possible but it was born into captivity so theoreticly should be much happier in an aquarium environment than 1 that has " known freedom"

as the op above said tho wild would be best for breeding from but just for keeping id like f1 tank bred

ok thanks for the responce interesting to know peoples views

I voted for wild caught. There are around 300 species of them in nature, and only a few are tank raised or farmed on a large scale. Of these few, the wild caught fish tend to be larger and more colorful. Generations of inbreeding takes it's toll.

New corydoras are still being found and classified. One cory (the C. weitzmani pictured below) was thought to be completely extinct. Even the literature about it displayed only a preserved specimen. Then, a new area in South America was explored for industrial purposes and they were discovered again. Hobbyists all over the world rushed to get them and try to breed them. Fortunately many were successful and now this little fish will survive in captivity even if it's native habitat is destroyed.

It's often the dedicated hobbyist fishkeeper like nelly, the folks who succeeded in breeding the C. weitzmani, and others who seek out unusual wild caught fish, that are real heroes for these endangered fish.

In some cases wild fish are more desirable (for breeding, ect.) but I would rather them stay in their natural habitat. Celestichthys margaritatus, for example, have been banned for export in Myanmar, because numbers are starting to dwindle in their natural habitat due to the aquarium trade and them being farmed. Not only that, in some cases water stats (Ph, Gh/Kh) have to be matched to those of where they came from, which you need to be very careful about doing.

I say tank bred for me. Of course I breed and sell tank raised specimens and am biased. It just makes more sense to buy tank raised so we don't deplete our natural resources.
