these may not be that new, but the last time i had a tank was 2008, i had old flurescent lights. I was at the LFS and all i see is led this led that, though beside marineland led lights i did not see any other kind. so idk if these two terms can be put together but what is the best and cheapest LEDs for a 55 gallon tank. I really like the moonlight setting, anyway i was reading on the net and some sites said if one goes out, they all do and you cant change just one.. anyway can anyone help me or point me to a good site
thanks

Have one made up for you ;) I do favours for people on here building them. No money making just a helpful hand. :)

What would you be illuminating?

If it's just fish and fake plants then any white LED strip will do.

If there's live plants then you'll need to know the Kelvin rating for the white LED's (as close to 6500k is best - sometimes referred to as 'daylight') to enable good growth.

If it's marine corals then you need to do a lot of research into spectrums, etc.

As for 'moonlighting', as long as it's not marines, any LED strip called that will suffice.

Most LED's are in strip form that you can either attach yourself to your existing hood or as a pendant to hang/perch over the tank. As long as the are IP68 rated (waterproof) they'll be fine. Lower quality strips may go off if one LED fails but better quality ones certainly won't and it would more likely be a wiring issue rather than LED failure as they have a lifespan of over 20,000hrs+.

I run LED's on my reef tank. I love them! I use the AI Sol Super Blues with the AI controller by Aqua Illuminations. Storm mode, moon mode (matches the moon phase at your time zone), and more. 1 Unit would be enough for a small tank. I have three on my 210 gallon, it's 6 feet long. The color rating is adjustable.
