Use the clove oil to knock it out, then add vodka to kill it. I do this when I get a rash of neon tetra disease in my community tank, and its basically the fish version of lethal injection. They don't feel a thing. Here's how:
1. Fill a container with tank water and put the fish in it.
2. In a separate sealable container, add a drop or two of clove oil to some more tank water and shake it until it you see a film of milky white.
3. Slowly add the mixture to the fish's container and it will start to fall asleep. It will stop moving, but it will still breathe very slowly. Keep checking it over 5-10 minutes to ensure it stops moving.
4. Once it is definitely asleep, add the vodka. You should add enough so that it's about 1/4 of the total liquid volume. Give it at least 10 minutes.
You can buy clove oil from a pharmacy. Around here, chains like CVS don't have it, but I get it from a small family-owned pharmacy.
