Aren't they mostly an oem these days sellilng to stores and other large volumes ?

Yes they are an importer/wholesaler.
I like reading about their new imports. Europe always gets the new fish before the U.S. does.

I know - europe has some great shops - i even tried to get one send me a fish i've been looking for 5 or 6 years; they wouldn't and i doubt we will ever see it in the usa.

They sell from their store and they also ship but only to commercial operations. I dealt with the people who were able to import from them in quantity. If I wanted to buy directly from Glaser I would have had to fly over there.

A number of years ago along with a person who was an importer we brought in 324 zebra plecos and 26 P. compta from Indonesia. The fish are not as cheap as the price lists indicate because one maust pay a box charge, shipping and clearing in the states. These raise the price per fish by about 15%. And then the cost may increase if some fish are lost not long after they arrive.

My role in the deal was to finance most of it and I had a deal with the NEC to sell some of the fish pre-event. We offereed attendees a very good price and all they needed to do was to commit to buying and the fish would be delivered at their weekend event in late March of 2020. I was running the pre-sales and had about 50 fish sold when Covid caused the event to be cancelled, but the import of the fish was not.

I was working with a person whi has a reatail business. He was also selling some of the plecos I was breeding. He ended ripping me off for a lot of money. But I decided not to sue as it was across state lines and i would likley have paid a lawyer more than the amount for which I would have sued. So I ate the loss.

As for Glaser fish I got L173b and L236 which originated withthem. In the past year the 236 were formally identified as part of the Hypancistrus Seideli complex which encompassed several different L-umbers. It turned out I had kept 236, 66 and 333 all of which are now variants of H. seideli,

I've owned a L333 before - mine was quite adorable as pleco go; he used to wear a hat; oh well i can't find the picture he was pretty adorable.

Oh my, that's too bad. Mine is always willing to look/ask their vendors if they have seen-can get fish I am interested in.

I have never relied on fish stores for almost anything.

Also, if I need to find something rare or unusual I can always rely on somebody in my fish club to know the answer to finding it. A lot of the time our guest speaker on a species can help with that. What I do know is it is not all that uncommon at my fish club meeting for some new and/or hard to find species turn up.

I have met a number of folks who travel the world to find fish. These folks often turn up a weekend events.

It is important to remember that fish stores exist to make money for the owner. This means many, but not all of them, will only do what they them is worthwhile for them.

A lot of us forget that most of the people who keep fish have just a single tank which they care for because they like to watch the fish. They do not care about endangered species or having rare fish. Some may end up with a 2nd or third tank over time but this makes them happy. Then their are the fish nuts who get very involved with things, and they want rarer fish and more tanks.

The farther outside a dense urban area in which one lives, the less likely it is to have a sophisticate shop which can and does get in the really neat stuff some of us may want.
