I was sitting here this evening watching my Mollies play and swim around after their weekly water change. They were really having a grand time enjoying the 2 new males I got about a week and a half ago. I previously had 2 adult females and 4 juvenile females (well 4 to 5 months old). Now I have 3 males! lol One of my *girls* has apparently figured out that she is a he and sometime within the last week has even developed into a he! I am more used to the development stages of a guppy. Is this common for this to happen this late or do I just have a late bloomer? I'm thinking he saw the other two males and well....just figured everything else out!

I could see it being possible with a guppy as the males are easier to identify and might end up with their colouration a little later than usual but still, that's not changing sex that's just identifying them.

With Mollys, it's a little more difficult as the best way to sex them is by looking at their anal fin. I guess it has just taken a little longer to develop. Again, it's not changing sex - it's just identifying them :)

I honestly chalk it up to finally having some male influence around. It is still quite funny on one hand. Hopefully, he'll figure things out. :) And yes....it was definitely me thinking I was seeing a female...just seemed to develop his gonopodium more pronounced recently. Won't assume anything anymore! lol

No I swear with mine he had the regular female triangle anal fin and even gravid spots.... Turns out those are now just his coloring AND his triangle anal fin turned into a male anal fin!

This just happened to my platy.  I bought 1 male and 3 females three weeks ago and suddenly I have 2 males and 2 females.  I don't know how old they are but it's come as a shock, I thought they were young adults and had no idea they could develop this late!

Yeah, sounds like a late bloomer to me. I've only ever had one late bloomer (a guppy).... seemed he spent more time growing in body size than the rest THEN sprung his male bits. LOL

I noticed my newly-endowed male is bigger than his rival, but seems to be lower in the social hierarchy.  They will flare and display to each other but the smaller established male usually seems to win these stand-offs and confidently gives him a nip to show his place.

I wonder if the late bloomer will eventually become more dominant once his sex drive has had time to fully develop.

Interesting about the mention of size. He is larger than his sibling fry (sister? lol) from the same drop and really seems to quite the meak one! Exact description! I will keep him for breeding! :)

Who me? I thought I had 2 males aand 6 females. I now have 3 males, one a jet black with a pretty yelllow trim to hiis dorsal fin and a splash of blueish green in his tail, a dalmation and now this white sailfin. My females, a white sailfin, one who is a wild type color (a dirty white almost), a marbled lyretail, a bronze/golden type lyretail and a gold dust gal. I have them in my 20 gallon with nothing else.
