Tank size: Currently 28 litre hospital tank, normally 65 litre.
pH: 7.8
ammonia: 0
nitrite: 0
nitrate: 10
kH: 120-130
gH: 280 (very hard)
tank temp: 27C

Fish Symptoms (include full description including lesion, color, location, fish behavior):

Started with what looked like hole-in-the-head. Little craters all over his head and some dorsal fin erosion. Craters seem to be improving (or at least not developing anymore) but he's developed a pink spot on his side that looks like a pin-prick and now has a bumpy growth above one eye. The eye itself seems OK, not cloudy or bloody, but the lump is sitting on the top of it. Krib more sedate than usual and tends to hover at the back of the tank. Doesn't seem too interested in food but fins are spread (not clamped) and he moves alertly when disturbed. The eye doesn't pop out or seem swollen.

Volume and Frequency of water changes:

50% every two weeks in the main tank, whatever is needed to keep the hospital tank ammonia free (currently running chemical filtration that seems to be doing the trick but carefuly monitored).

Chemical Additives or Media in your tank:

No chemical media in main tank, where symptons developed. Only additives are quality water conditioner. He has been given a course of Furanol II in the hospital tank, as the symptoms were initially bacterial. This has ended and he's been in pristine, un-medicated water with just a little aquarium salt since. Baffled now and not sure how to proceed.

Tank inhabitants:

Main tank has a juvenile L-number plec (4-5 inches), a golden panchax (4 inches), a lonely male swordtail and two bumblebee cats (4 inches). No shoaling fish and all the fish are active and don't spend much time hiding (apart from the cats, who are nocturnal). All get on, no fighting except for occasional some squabbles over food and none of them are wary or behave stressed.

Recent additions to your tank (living or decoration):

Changed decor from live to silk plants several weeks ago but all other decor has been in there for months and months. Silk plants were not new and had been used in other tanks, but very well cleaned and dried before use in this tank.

Exposure to chemicals:

Unknown but highly unlikely. We're very careful.

UPDATE:

The area around the affected eye seems to have some yellowy-orange colouration and the eye seems to be starting to pop out a bit. The growth is also getting bigger. He's developed a white spot about half-way down his back, at the base of his dorsal, and there is a patch of lighter fin just above it that is new.

Someone?

Can't find any resources online that give much information. We've had two other kribensis die in the last 3 months from something similar but they were in a different tank.

i am going to take an educated guess and try Tumors? it looks Tumor-ish to me. it shouldn't really be a problem unless it is cancerous, in which case you can get a professional to cut off the tumor for your fish.

Have you researched heximita?(i think i spelled it correctly-going of memory here). realated to hole in the head. Get some liquid baby vitamins and use them on some flake food. Let dry before feeding. Id also suggest a good tank treatment for external/internal parasites just to be sure-metronidazole, lavamasole and praziquentil.
any other symptoms? fish bloated or skinny? spitting out food? flicking or rubbing? loss of appetite?
Gorgeous fish!
best of luck
Cheers

Eye is really protruding now. Lump getting bigger. He's definitely not happy - just sits in the same place and is ignoring food. He's not bloated or skinny, pretty normal in terms of body shape.

Loraxchick, I did consider hexamita and hole-in-the-head. However, he's not lost any weight and it's this lump that is really baffling me. I've not seen anything like it, either in real life or online. The closest is a tumor or lymphocysts but that wouldn't explain why I have had two other kribs in a seperate tank be affected by this condition. It's bizarre.

He was treated with Furanol II a week or so again which is a strong antibacterial. Antibiotics are unfortunately not an option. I'm now treating with an antiparasite by Waterlife (Sterazin). I'll see if I can pick up something for flagellated protozoa.

Sort of resembles lympho but you are right that it shouldnt kill the fish (so not explaining other fish's deaths-did they di of the same thing?)
I think going anti-parasitic route is best-does not appear bacterial to me.
Any red pin-prick size spot right in the middle of the growth?
I think youre on a good track. The sterazin will help with any secondary bacterial problem that may arise but id try parasite meds at this point.
best of lucK!!
cheers

The growth just seems grey/white. I can't see any red dots. It's still growing and his eye is scarily far out of the socket now, and very red around the sides. This is exactly what happened with the other two kribs (who shared a tank, but were not in the same tank as this male). No non-kribs have been affected, but I did have a run of unexplained tiger barb deaths in the other krib tank. They just seemed to fade away, one pineconed, and didn't share any symptoms with the kribs.

Got the eSHA hole-in-the-head med coming in the mail. It claims:

• Effectively treats 'Hole in the head disease'.
• Effectively treats other bacterial and fungal infections.
• Prevents disease in newly acquired stock.
• Protects fish from secondary infections.

Seems to be a bit of an all-in-one style treatment, but I hope it will cover the bases. This started off looking like classic hole-in-the-head (with the pits and craters).

Try this when it gets here or stick with the Sterazin?
