I have a couple of 7cm (2 3/4") terra cotta pots at one end of the tank, do I need to "close off" the front openings a bit, as I've read that they don't like to be able to be seen when spawning and when the fry hatch?

There are many different things that you can do. The way I find the best is( my new technique), take a plastic container, and join a plast pvc pipe to it. Then, take the container, and bury it, but keep the pvc part out of the ground. So the parents will be able to go throuhg the pipe, and into the container, were they can spawn in peace, and not be afraid.

wow that sounds like a really awesome idea. any chance we could have some pics of your setup? or is there some already on the board that i missed? i have 2 caves and i buried the back enterenace, and there are two small openings which are close together int he front

a photo would be great.

Sounds very clever, but really ugly! LoL! This is my main display tank at the moment so I want it to look good too!

it wouldnt be to bad. you could bury the whole container, and the pipe, only have the opening showing. you wouldnt even be able to tell if its a pipe or not. at least thats how i have it pictured in my head

my camer is broken, but when it is working, i will take a pic. I cant take it out, so all you will see is the pvc pipe. I thik the kribs are making magic in there, and i dont want to desturb them.
I have to say, for an eigth grader, i am pretty clever. ( trying to be humble)

that is extremely clever. i went around petsmart and was thinking about what i could make a cave out of, now i know to come to you for good ideas lol

i'm still waiting on my kribs to go boom boom sorta speak lol. they better soon!

take a picture whenever you can, i'd be really interested in seeing your tank layout

The caves you have pasted up these look fantastic. It is Krib heaven!
I've bred Kribs for over 20 years and found that some will breed in the most primitive of cave set ups - they'll improvise if they need to and create shelter from gravel and exisitng rocks/plants.
I found that one of those small terracota pipes that they sell in LFS works perfectly - as a lo-cost, no hassle solution.

I am a noobie, and I threw some pvc into the tanks, and the apistos really take to it. Picture to follow. I have a pair of kribs in a large PVC thing, kind of unsightly but easy to move around. Actually moved the pair of kribs by picking up the PVC elbow thing with them in it!
