Anyone had any bad expriences with this?

Had no problems whatsoever with my dads aquarium, except for a small snail gathering. All the fish perfectly healthy and water perimeters as they should be. Was in the lfs today and my dad decided to purchase some King British snail control. Got home, read the instructions and guides and did everything as specified.

However, the fish are now acting...wierd.

My galaxy rasbora change colour during the night. They go a cream colour when the lights are off. However when the lights are on, within 5 minutes they are ok, so I assume this is just normal for them as I've seen it with other fish. They only do it at night. However they are all now this cream colour and are showing no signs of changing.
The platy, which is usually the most active thing I've ever seen, is motionless next to the filter intake. My sparkling gourami are motionless and every so often seem to go into a little swimming spurt where they'll fly around the tank and then suddenly stop.
My pygmy cories, amano shrimp and red nose shrimp are all acting normal, no change in behaviour.

When I switched the lights off, it did seem to bring the platy to life and it was swimming around the tank. When I switched them back on it seemed startled and went back to the bottom of the tank next to the intake, as though it was in shock.

Could it be this snail control stuff? It seemed to go like this very quickly, so I'm not entirely sure it's the cause. I mean 4ml of treatment surely can't be enough to take effect so quick and cause such changes? Or am I completely wrong?

after treating the tank for snails did you remove any of the dead snails from it?
I'm guessing you didn't and they are rotting in their creating all manner of toxins.

• Once snails have been eradicated they should be removed from the aquarium otherwise they will decompose & cause poor water quality

I tried King British Snail Control and had a similiar problem. My fish starting acting up and seeming sick way before any snails started dying, so I stopped with the attempt, did a water change, and added carbon to the filter. And that was only after one small dose. It's strong stuff and the packet is plastered with warnings accordingly. It can be toxic in soft water.

I'd stop with the Snail Control, do a water change, etc. If you want to kill the snails use Flubenol 15. Details here http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?showto...41473&st=16

I had a massive snail infestation and completely eradicated it using the method described. And I had no detoriation in water quality, no fish deaths, and no signs of sickness or weird behaviour.

Only bought the treatment yesterday and this behaviour started about 10/15 minutes after the treatment was added. So don't think there are any dead snails yet.

All the fish seem fine this morning, with the exception of the platy. Galaxy Rasbora/CPD have their colour back and are acting normal, gouramis are being their usual self but the platy still seems a little shocked. It's moving around a lot more but still seems to be startled by the slighest movement near it. This is a fish that would take food from your hand and would nip at your arm if you was doing anything in the tank, so not a fish that is easily startled.

I will stop with the Snail Control though just incase and will have a look at the method you tried. Thanks.

Hope it works.

If you want to control the snail population rather than control it, you can buy humane snail traps. Be careful though as fish can get stuck in it, as I found out when I had to free my Betta from one. To make the entrance narrow enough to stop fish getting in, it had be to wide for most snails, so I wouldn't recommend that route.

Most snail controls are absolutely rubbish.

They mostly contain copper which can be harmful to some fish.

Best to use natural methods like the snail trap (mentioned above)
or some loaches (chain loaches are small ones but like to be kep in groups)
a slice of lettuce or cucumber held down (a fork in the substrate is easiest) and then remove in the morning covered with snails.
By hand picking them out

Or just ignoring them- they don't do any harm, the population is only proportional to amount of food available (so cut down on feeding), the population often goes away by itself after a while.
