Kinds Of Wood

After recent threads about driftwood / bogwood in tanks, i got thinking.

Can you put and wood you find in your tank (after soaking it for long enough, and maybe a good scrub)
Biffster said drift wood from the beach can contain a lot of salt that can seriously muck things up. This makes sence, but how about that tree at the bottom of my garden?

In short, could i make a nice scape out of bits of wood, instead of the usual rocks?

I have used bogwood, red moor, mopani, heather and oak. Assuming there is no fertiliser, pollutants or anything like that in the wood, you can collect oak. Most other types of wood are not suitable because most soft wood will rot in water.

I think one of my peices was rotting (the one you can see on the left in my sig). I got it at P@H ages ago but after all these months it was still shedding "bits" and when I lifted it up the other day there was so much under it and it made me wonder if it was responsible/contributing to my bacterial probs. So I took it out and replaced with a much smaller plastic piece which I actually think looks better as it takes up less room!
