Brief synopsis:

The environment minister has issued an appeal for any anglers who catch american signal crayfish to kill them rather than throwing them back.
Theres a full list of reasons on the article, but from what I understand it is very good advice.

i think we should arrange a "crayfish cook out" night! problem is most of our river banks are private. this means that getting permission is a problem. remember the owner would be responsible for any accident you may have on their land. why not pay a ransom for each cray handed in dead? something to remember though. in the past, mass trapping has , actually, lead to an increase in the population. counts twelve months after such a trap, often reveal this. quite why this happens is unclear, though the fact theat many small cray escape traps, leaving only the bigger crays caught. some speculate that the removal of larger crayfish from a river, could well be the cause of this. mature and larger signals are known to be very cannibalistic, so it could be that their removal, allows many smaller crayfish to live. causing an increase in the population, as one of their only predictors, has been removed.
