i have a couple questions..

what is kH?

what are the most common illnesses and how do you spot them? whats a good medicine kit to keep?

What does flicking look like? I think I can work out rubbing.

Is it possible to fishless cycle without ammonia? I noticed somewhere someone said rotting food can help?

erm.. i think that was it.

some links for you in my sig, the one called 'pH and KH' should answer question 1

included in the link 'step by step guide to setting up an aquarium' is a medicine kit to keep around, look in the emergencies forum and there's a pinned topic with a list of common diseases

flicking is another word to describe rubbing

yes, if you can't get ammonia you can do it with fish food but it's not as easy or reliable so ammonia is advised where possible.

The most important thing about KH is that it measures the "delay" in pH being changed. If KH is zero the acids or bases can cause the pH of your water to change very quickly and by a lot (can be very bad for fish.) If KH is a high number, the water will be delayed or stopped from having its pH changed quickly or by a lot. This doesn't mean high KH is necessarily a good thing, it just means its a measure.
