Looking for cheap 2nd hand 5ft tanks at the moment and the Juwel Rio 400 seem to be the most common one to get for sub £200.

I seem to remember reading somewhere (maybe on here) that jewel tanks arent particularly good for marine and are prone to cracking.

Has anyone got a jewel tank set up as a marine tank?

mine is a jewel and i wouldn't say they are prone to cracking - seem good to me and after running my (2nd hand) tank for 4 months it all seems good.

Make sure the internal filter is removed and i suppose the brace bar doesn't help with the lights but it's not that bad...

wll i ran a rio 180 for years on tropical thn converted to marine and have recently a few months back brought a rio 400 with beach cabinat and lights for 180 pounds and the guy bfor had it on marin for many yars and i also need to re glue one of the brac bars back on as i dropped some lr on it and one broke off been like it for months tho so  ill glue it back on yhough all in all i find them great

my next reef tank is RIO 125, theyre pretty tanks IMO and the brace bar doesnt (noticeably) stop light getting into it... obviously it does but it isnt noticeable. and the braces can be replaced with clear ones too.

the braces are just bad if you are having halides. My mates got a 180 and hes having to use two halides or T5's when he makes his mind up

That's the tank I was looking at as well Barney :good: Ace of spades has one for sale, he lives in Basildon ( I think) so probably an hour and half ish from you :good:

I have the juwel 180 and rather like the tank - certainly wouldn't be worried about cracking :good:

Glass is still a PITA for lighting if you are using a Halide. It will cast a highly visible shadow. It is fine for T5 or other florescent lighting though...

All the best
