several people have said that juwel ask u to change the filters far too often. would like to hear from other juwel users..........how often do u change yours :p

We have a Juwel 180 and we clean the white pad once a week and replace it once a month.
The green and blue sponges are cleaned every three months and we have never yet needed to replace them.

Having said that, this tank also has an external canister filter running on it at the same time.

thanks for confirming what i had thought. just wanted it confirmed by someone who knows what they r talking about :D , as i certainly don't

 your puffer is lovely

do u have an external on the tank because of the puffer or would u recommend anyway?

Thank you! Vote for Martha!

The Juwel filters also collect a surprising amount of crud right at the bottom of the casing under the sponge basket, so it's important to get your vac in there from time to time to suck it all out before it becomes a nitrate factory.

Be careful if you have fry or khulis though as they love to hide in there!

The 180 is a community tank with lots and lots of plecs producing mountains of poop. That's why it's got extra filtration.
They like the extra water movement too.

I have a Juwel Rekord 96 and I change the sponges as the manufacturers say in the leaflet. I do find that the white pad gets very dirty, I change it every 4-5 days. I have never managed to rinse it out and re-use, I am envious of people who can! I am up to the limit on stocking levels. I hope to have a 50 UK gal tank for Xmas. :) And keep the old one as well!

I try to rinse the white pads out, but they mostly seem to fall apart - maybe I'm too rough on them! I replace the white pads once a week-ish - have never replaced the blue ones. Don't use the carbon - haven't needed it so far.

Edit: Dont know about fry and kuhlis at the bottom, my guppies seem to thing the top is their private spa - every time I do a water change I fish 3 or 4 out, much to their disgust. I have no idea how they get in there, unless they swim up the side of the outflow?!?!?! Or maybe they jump out, slide along the cover and dive in through the little hole in the top?!?!?!? Blinkin' guppies are nutters!

I have a Juwel 180 too. I replace the white filter pads weekly - I cannot be bothered to rinse them as they are usually pretty mucky. The other sponges I rinse in siphoned tank water weekly and replace probably every 3-4 months or so. Though to be honest, I can't really see the actual need in that as it's not like the are disintegrating or anything. But they manufacturer says to replace them, so I do....

The white filter floss i rince every water change and replace when the fiber becomes seperated, i clean the blue sponges once a month, never replace one.

The carbon pads i dont use becarse there to exspencive, i place carbon in a stocken and put it in the top of the fillter.

I dont buy the white filter floss pads becarse they cost £4 plus for a box or 2/4?? i use the large filter floss sheets, that you can buy for pond filters, and cut then to strips and fold them up, they cost just under £3 for a sheet, which make about 8 for a juwel rio 300 (jumbo filter).

hope this will save you some money :D

That's all EXACTLY what I do!

Sheet of floss instead of pre-cut
loose carbon in a bag instead of sponge.

BIG money saver.

I keep goldfish in my rio 180. I replace the white pad once a week, the carbon once a month. I rinse the other sponges in old tank water once a week. I've never replaced them and I've had the tank nearly two years now.

thanks, that is a great money saving tip.........will go and buy some this afternoon. never realised just how expensive this fish keeping lark would be  and now i seem to be drawn to ebay looking for another tank...............

where do u buy most of your supplies, lfs or online?

I have a Juwel Rekord 120 that has been running for around 6/7 years and a Rio 300 that has been running 4/5 years and the filter sponges have never been replaced yet, all they get is a rinse in a bucket of tankwater every 3 or 4 months when the flow from the filter is noticably reduced and the white pad gets replaced when it litterally falls apart in my hands. I dont use carbon in any of my filters, its unnessesary unless you are using it to remove a chemical treatment from the water after a disease outbreak so i have filled the space left by the carbon with another blue sponge.
Juwel and other filter manufactorers only recomend that you replace the filter media regularly so that they continue to make money from their product with after sale purchases.
