Hi Everyone,

has anyone upgraded the lighting on a Juwel Rekord 60 Tank.

i'm about to redo mine but it it has no centre brace and cant see how to add tubes to the existing lid.

any help at all would be appreciated.

I contemplated doing this for a long time, so I know the theory behind it........

If you want the lights to be evenly distributed, the way to do it is to remove the ballast, cut a hole in the bottom where the ballast used to sit and fit the extra tube there. You will need to buy an additional ballast to drive these two lamps.

Code:
Side view of hood, O=tube, B=ballast
           --      -----------
 Front     |        O[_B_|  |

With new tube

--      -----------
|        O[O   |  |

If you want to use the existing ballast as well, then you will need to find a suitable housing for it so it poses no hazard due to the exposed wires etc.

In the end I bought a new hood (£8 ) at Pets@home, bought a twin light ballast (£25) and fitted it. The original hood is now in my garage :)

I have also been thinking about doing this on my record 70...now I'm planning a trip to Pets at Home (cheers Dubby!) Any chance of a pic of your pets at home hood with both lights etc? Is access any better than the standard hood?

(hope you don't mind me asking all these questions in your thread jimbooo)...

ask away..

sounds great. thanks for the diagram but i can see the mess i'll make of it (not the greatest DIYer)

replacement hood sounds fantastic as Daza said, do you have any Pics..

I changed my light just turn the caps and it releases, make sure the rubber insdie is back in it's place.

I just popped to Pets at Home. My one didn't have any £8 hoods. They did have wooden 24" (and other size) hoods. They looked nice, with a hinged front top-half, but are £35 with no lights fitted. I didn't think to note the width measurement though because I got carried away looking at the fish and other stuff! They did look very close to the Juwel width.

Hmmm interesting. how much room is there underneath the lid. i ideally want 3 tubes in there, do you think they'd fit.

i'm getting the hump now i keep finding hoods that can only take one tube

is there no manufacturer who understands that you need more than one tube.

I changed my light just turn the caps and it releases, make sure the rubber insdie is back in it's place.

sorry wilder, i should have been clearer i need to add tubes not replace ideally 2 more so total of 3

The ones I've got are made from plastic, black (flimsy looking) hoods with no opening for feeding. You have to lift the entire lid to feed etc.

But these are quite sturdy after all as they have been holding onto my lights for over a year. And there is enough space for 3 lights (perhaps 4) as the top is flat all the way (no bumps, humps for decorations) :)

No pics, sorry :( Its a pity you cant find them at your place. I'll check at mine next time.

yeah i had one of those lids on a betta tank. i know exactly what you mean.

to put you in the picture the misses is not too keen on the tanks as it is. if it doesn't look perfect i'll be for the high jump. she thinks it's "okay as it is", yeah whatever like that will make any difference! if i do a bodge job of the lid you can see what will happen....

i really need a proper replacement hood with opening flaps for feeding etc.. but all the hoods i have come across which look the part have no room inside for multiple tubes.

from memory, I'd say the hoods were about 5" high. I reckon three tubes might just fit if one was fitted to the lift-up flap.

I am thinking about making my own to the same sort of design.

Just found a pic. The hoods on that site look exactly the same (so do the stands).

ahh those. i saw them on the weekend.(sorry no PC at home)

the thing i was concerned with is the ammount of overlap at the top of the tank. your loosing a lot of viewing space by the design of the hood.

however. as impatiemt as i am problem is now solved.

i bought another tube, ballast and reflector yesterday. i noticed in the rekord 60 there is a small plastic strip in the centre of the "access flap". i drilled a tiny hole through it and also drilled the same size hole in the reflector and with a tiny nut and bolt attached the new tube here.

the only drawback is i now only have a small gap between the tubes to feed through and have to remove the lid for major jobs (cleaning etc..) but the external look hasnt changed which for me is perfect.

i'll take a pic tonight if you're interested.

If you could post a pic then that would be great. It would also be good if you can keep us informed of how much better your plants grow now.

cheers :)

Hi Guys....

A few weeks ago I asked in another section about adding another light to my reckord 96. Me and I think it was you, Daza, Talked about putting it where the slope bit is. Well I did it and it works great. I lose No access space. But That may not be the case on the smaller reckord models. I just used an Arcadia pack. Which cost me £15, and you can get it cheaper on-line

yep, it was you and I KentBlokey....it's good to hear that it works okay, that's another possibility then.

i'll take a pic tonight. but it's only a camera phone so wont be great.

one thing i have noticed is my 2 month old guppy fry LOVE the brighter tank. theyre much more playfull. looks loads better as well.
