Hi,

New to this forum and the hobby itself so go easy, anyway just bought my first aquarium today. It's a Juwel rekord 700 and is pretty awesome. I followed all the instructions and assembled it correctly, filled it, dechlorinated and began cycling. Upon immidiately switching the pump on, i noticed that it was really loud and buzzing. I have tried allsorts to cure it, including securing the wiring, running it out of the filter housing, tapping it on my desk to see if anything was in the impeller and nothings worked.

I was reading about this somewhere else and it was the exact same problem but there was never a cure so i wondered if you guys could help.

Josh.

This is normal with new filters, it should settle down after a day or two. Its usually trapped air in the Filter and around the impellor that causes it and as the air dissapates it should become quieter.
One of my filters took a couple of weeks to become quieter but mostly its a couple of days.

Thanks for the quick and helpful post, i did infact read somewhere that new pumps require a 'bedding in' period so i will give it time. I have been told by my LFS that sometime next week i should bring a sample of my water in and test it and then lightly stock it with a few neons or guppys, what would you recommend?

One week is nowhere near enough time to cycle your tank.

Really would recommend you read the "cycling a tank" link at top of page to do a fish less cycle.

Then you can talk stocking once you start doing that and know what's happening regarding doing fish less cycling and then you can research suitable fish for your tank and set up :)

Thanks Charlie, read it quite a few times and i've got a grasp of it but my mum's took note of what the man said and is adiment that i wait 'til next week. Personally i was gonna try API quickstart and wait 1 week or so with 'snacking' on food.

Perhaps you could have your mom read the article as well? It will really go so much smoother if you fishless cycle first.

:hi: to the forum, Josh.

Unfortunately, it is rare that API QuickStart works. :/
You could try it (if you have already bought it) and do the fishless cycle (as per the guide in my signature) while using it, there is a chance that it could work so you might as well try it.

Get your mum to read that article.  Hopefully she will understand that you need to wait longer than a week.
If you can get some mature filter media then your cycle will go a lot faster.

If your mum still wants to do the wait a week then stock, then read THIS article. Try to get her to read it too, then she can understand how much work is involved in doing a fish in cycle.
