Play sand from Home Depot or Lowe’s is safe for a tank .... I’m headed there shortly. Don’t want to buy it if it’s not safe.

Yes, it should be safe.

Some members here say quikrete brand of playsand is safer than sakrete.

Be careful of the brand...Quikrete Play Sand is safe, and this is available from Home Depot and Lowe's IN Canada and I believe the USA. But do not use Sakrete, it even says on their site that it is not safe for aquariums.

And I bought two five gallon buckets. Going to be redoing my substrate today or tomorrow

Some people think they need to rinse and rinse this sand, but I never do. I rinse it to remove the worst of the dirt, but not to excess. I put about five cups of sand in a bucket, and rinse it five times. Then dump that into the empty tank, and on to the rest of the sand until you have what you need. It is best when it is spread out evenly at about 1.5 to 2 inches.

I did half a bag. Rinsed 8 times. About to take everything out of the tank.
I first take everything out of tank then wash my sand then put it in my tank then I put in my things and fish back in the tank :D
I think I'm the most complicated person in the whole world....
