I had a breeding pair of blue acaras. They were not getting along well they would spawn then hate eachother. So I split them up I was sick of watching all the drama.

So I now have the male BC 3.5" with a 2" EBJD. I saw some very cute severums miss labled at a pet store they were labled as Jack dempseys so they were only $4 and 2" big. I was so temped to get one. I will be getting another tank 80gl or larger within a year. I'm looking for a good deal on one now.

But in the mean time could I get away with a baby EBJD Blue acara and serverum in a 55 gal 4 foot long 1 foot wide tank?? Or am I just crazy and need to stop looking at fish. It would only be a temperary tank more like a grow out tank. These fish seem to be slow growers. My blue acaras grew really fast but now at almost 4" they have slowed down. And I know there is no way I could keep those fish full grown all together in a 55 gL.

So how much time would I have to find my bargin tank for them if I get a 2" baby severum??

Is a taller tank out of the question at a later date?

They will all be fine for over a year easy....maybe longer.

A taller tank? Taller then 24" ?

That's what I was thinking that the fish would be fine for a year or so. From what I have been reading about other peoples severums they take a long time to get to full 12" like over 3 years or so together that big.

So I might get one and see how it goes.

Depends on the Severum...every green/Turq/Rotkeil i have ever kept has grown Oscar style wheras every gold or red I have had have been very slow growers.

Sorry i didnt know your tank was 24" high.

Yeh you will need to get a bigger tank eventually purley because Severums have a huge body mass...even if only 12" long (can get to 14")....the EBJD and BA are fine long term.

Yeah that's the Plan to get a bigger thank when I need it. Right now the Severum is only 1" the size of a US silver dollar. It's a basic Green Severum well that's what it looks like to me.

I did it I got him. I gave away my Medusa pleco and Flying fox. So I had room for a baby. They all seem to be getting along just fine. They just check each other out and then go one their way. He or She is so cute it will be cool to see what it grows up too look like.

Here is my new baby and my ticket to getting a bigger tank.

Looks cute :) could be a Rotkeil also...you never know...the yellow fin is some times a rough indication that it could be....most greens have red anal fins.

This was my Rotkeil when it was juvinile just for refrence.

Nice fish I love the bright yellow.

Well if mine turns out to be a Heros sp. Rotkeil I will be very surprised seeing that I got her for $4.00 But the store I got her from had no clue what kind of fish it was. The colors look similar to yours but the head shape is a bit different. Only time will tell for sure.

Interesting I think I will start a post and see what over people this she is.

growth rates in sevs does seem to be very variable from specemin to specemin . my green has been a slow grower whereas vinny my red spotted just went crazy and went from a little 2 inch squirt to a 6 inch beauty in around 6 or 7 months i have now had him just over a year and he is easily 7.5 inches . so be aware that you may have to get the bigger tank sooner than you think, especially with cichlids being territorial fish .

Ahh must be diff then.

The Turq i used to have grew from 1" to 8" in the space of about 7-8 months before i sold him (he wasent the nicest looking specimen)...my adult gold grem from 5" to 9" in a year...my Red Spotted grew 1" in 4 months...Rotkeil grew from 1/2" to 6" in 6 months.

i found with my green that it just didnt seem to grow at all for like months then it had a mad spurt but has slowed a bit now

O right...coudl be down to 'whos getting the food' Its teh same in Oscars sometimes....some are rapid some are slow.

Very interesting. Well if I need a bigger tank sooner I'm ok with that. as soon as we move I will be getting a bigger tank and we found a house so I might get the tank sooner.
