For anyone who wants a small HOB filter for a tank smaller than 3 gallons these two filters are exactly the same. I got the Azoo unit for half the price of the Red Sea unit online for $6.

For those who are using either of these filters, is the black corse sponge carbon impregnated? Or is it just a regular black sponge? I have both filters and was just wondering. I might have to contact the manufacturer to find out.

...is the black coarse sponge carbon impregnated?
The small sponge does not have any carbon on it. Since the supplied media (sponge & filter pad) was too small, I cut an AquaClear sponge down and added filter floss to fit the space better.

A while back when I suggested that the two units were the same, my comment was shot down in flames.
It's nice that you saw the connection as well. :D

Yeah the GPH specs looked very similar as are the flow control knobs. I was only able to confirm they are identical when I got the Azoo and compared it to my Red Sea unit. Anyway thanks for the tip about using the aquaclear sponge, I may go that route.. :)

Initially I thought the black coarse sponge had a coating of carbon on it and I was worried that if I didn't replace it after a couple weeks, it would leech toxins back into the tank. If this were the case and I had to replace it every couple weeks that would mean the bacteria on the sponge would go out with every sponge replacement which isn't a very good idea. Think I'll use the aquaclear sponge to be 100% safe.
