i bought some fish for my tank, first of the lot, they are not that big, two are orangey colour and two are striped, lady said they are molly type, and easy to keep, seem very active, round fish, only got four, my tank has been cycling for 6 weeks, and now finally i got to get some fish, and i have two danios in there with the new fish. What kind of fish are these that i bought and does anyone know of a website i can go to look at pictures of all tropical fish varieties and see if they are compatible with one another.

Also, now my tank is fully cycled, how often should i change the water, and if i leave it too long, will my fish die? What does the filter actually do?

thank you

I am sorry....but did you really just go out and buy fish without having any idea of what they are?:no:

what size is your tank?
how did you cycle it?
list all the fish you have in there:
pictures, if you can take them, will really help us identify your fish.

for the future, please do some research before buying a living animal....some fish need completely different water chemistry's than others, some are territorial, some grow very large, varied diet requirements, varied temperature needs etc are all reasons to research - - you have to make sure your fish your fish are compatible and can live together happily

Hi shahnaz :)

I'm going to move your thread to the New Tank section. I think you might get some more friendly and useful help over there.

looking back at my first post, it did come off quite harsh and I apologize.

Still would love to know a few things about the tank so we can help you get in the right direction

Ok as to identifying the fish, without pictures i really couldn't help.

as to your questions about your tank maintenance, you say your tank is fully cycled, how do you know this? did you fishless cycle?

you should probably do a 10-30% water change every week, hoovering as much detritus as possible out of your tank, to prevent it rotting and causing further problems.

The filter provides an environment for bacteria to grow, this bacteria converts ammonia (fish waste) to nitrate which is much less harmful to fish, you then remove the nitrate with the water changes.

so sorry for the late reply, they are tiger barbs and the aquarium said they are ok to go into my tank, which has been cycling for 9 weeks with four danios, and it is fully cycled and i do water changes every week and add chlorine thing in it aswell, also add water cleaning stuff in it that the aquarium gave to me. my tank is 54 litre, so how many fish can i get in there and what is compatible with tiger barbs. thanks.

jenste, that's fine my post may have come as a bit dim. since the last time i came on here, one tiger barb died and two danios died, but my water was fine and i was told this may be just a coincidence........... or is it, i do water testing every week and it all seems in hand and the fish seem happy.

Hi shahnaz,

Would it be possible for you to post the results of your water testing so that we can determine for definate that your water is actually ok? What test are you using?

Unfortunately fish shops have a terrible habit of giving the wrong info and advice to their customers and it`s a very good possibility that they`ve done the same to you about your water, tank and fish.

The fact that one of your barbs and two of your danios have already died shows that there`s something wrong, hopefully between us all we can find out why and help make sure it gets sorted. :)

the danios died very early on and the tank wasnt cycled then, i was told to do a cycle with them in there...big mistake after reading it up on here, and i dont know why the barb died, the reading was nitrite 0 nitrate 25 and ammonia 0, this was done on thursday. today the test showed ph 7.6 kh mg 50, gh mg/1 125, nitrate 0, nitrite 0, ammonia 0 ideal. i used the test strips king british 6 in one water test strips. Does this sound ok? also i have steam on the glass - is this algae and shall i buy an algae eater? thanks

i also water change and siphon the tank every monday....and if the levels are high i change the water again during the week, i am very new to this, but i love these fish and want to keep going and i dont want the to come to any harm

We find that the paper strip tests are so unreliable that they can lead to wrong decisions, this is why you see liquid-reagent test kits recommended on here so often and the reason we often encourage beginners to obtain these early on in the process. You may have been having toxin levels above zero and not known it.
