Sure but here is the thing.
1. Online petitions never work.
2. Petco doesn't care. They are only interested in money, not caring for the fish.
3. Customers don't want to be educated. Most are just happy with what they think is right, to them caring for a betta costs 5 bucks and don't want to have to potentially spend more money and time to invest in a "fish".

i have come across probably half a dozen people in my time that havent been too interested in any advice. most people however are happy to hear how they can stop having to come back and buy fish after fish.

I agree completely with 1, mostly with 2 but not 3.

Petco's (and Petsmart and all the other chains) number 1 concern is making money. There are some stores though where the employees that work the fish section are in the hobby just like us and truely try their best to properly care for the fish and give good advice.

As for Number 3, I'm sure there are some out there that really don't care but the majority would love to be educated so they can properly care for their fish. After all, they're not just buying a $5.00 betta. They're buying a bowl or tank, food, decorations, etc. so it is at least somewhat of an expensive setup, even without a filter and heater. Unfortunately, the employees in way too many of the chain pet stores and even some true fish stores are giving out terrible advice so even when they are "learning" something about the care of their fish, it is too often wrong.

To tell you the truth, 3 is pretty acurate. But, if we could show the public that fish can suffer under bad conditions, and explain the kind of pain ("How would you like to breath ammonia fumes all day every day?") and then, if pet stores were better with their employees, and made it mandatory to explain everything to the clientel, perhaps they would be abit more responsive. A friend of mine once went to Petco and saw a fish about to be bought, then a few minutes later he was DEAD! Anyway, Sep. first Petco is having fish workshops in their stores. Go to Petco.Com for info. Any, Gotta go! I'll be back soon!

I still disagree that people don't want to be educated. I think most people want to know how to do things whether it's care for fish, play golf or play music. If they do it they want to know how to do it well. And while I strongly believe that fish feel pain, I have yet to see any hard clinical evidence that shows that they do. As I said, most people that don't keep fish don't consider fish to be on the same level as dogs, cats or other pets. You can't hold a fish on your lap and pet him (or at least it's now very wise to do so) or put a leash on him and take him for a walk. And I don't think there is any way that opinion of fish will ever change.

Do we need to show people how ammonia affects them and how it affects fish? Remember, ammonia in you lungs is painful. As for fish on the same level as dogs and cats, take oscars, for instance, and other fish that recognize you and come to your fingers, and some that play games. We need to film a documentary. Even bettas will recognize you. My sisters female betta comes to my fingers, follows them, if we could show the public that side of fish, POW! We got it.

I don't believe fish recognize you so much as they just realize that we bring food. You could let a total stranger walk up to the tank and they would come to the feeding place.

We need to show the big companies pain in terms of financial loss. We need to reach the public first, show them the problem in the correct manner and have them join.

I'm afraid that the store you're petitioning against may not recognize it if you simply go to the store and present it. You need to mail it to the store's headquarters.
