got a BEAUTIFUL red fighter today.
in a 10 L tank
i have the food,

but my main question is about my filter...
it creates a current, which sometimes catches out the betta and seems to knock him about a bit.

should i have the filter in there...?

also...
what else should i put in the tank?
(plants...ect)

cheers guys,
iain

Fake or real plants are good and the filter isn't needed but it helps a lot if you don't want to clean your tank often

congrats on your new addition! I have java fern and Amazon frogbit in my tanks. If you don't want to use real plant then use silk rather than plastic plants so that your betta wont damage his fins.

There was another post on here recently about filters. It was suggested that a plastic bottle be cut down and used to help 'mute' the power of the filter. There was a diagram too if you take a look back through the forum,

See: How to make your filter less powerful in betta tank.

ive decided to remove the filter.
if i put plant in there, wont it produce lots of crud though...?

Live plants in fact help keep your ammonia levels down, do they're a good move! Not only do they help with the water quality, but they look good and the betta will like them too!

The plants make a little bit of crud but absorb the nitrates which is made from good bacteria that eats ammonia that then turns to nitrite which is in turn eaten by bacteria that eats the nitrite who turn it into nitrate

Oooooh so you mean my dream could be possible?

I want to use the tanks you get from home bargains to house a betta is this ok to do?

i thought they would need company

Bettas don't need company and some dislike the thought of it while others prefer company since I don't know bargain homes I can't help with that area

Did your tank come with a light? Live plants need about 6-8 hours light a day. You can buy clip on ones if necessary. Also, do you have a heater? You didn't mention one, and bettas are tropical and need to be kept at around 26C. Sorry if you already know this. A filter is really a good idea to save having to do loads of water changes and people often use sponge filters for a really small tank as they don't produce flow.

Congratulations on your boy. Pictures are always welcome. :D

i have no heater,
but was told they can survive at room temperature...?

also,
what about small tankmates for him?
just thinking along the lines of snails/shrimp/plecos...???

cheers :good:

No, he needs a heater as he's a tropical fish ^u^

I don't think tankmates would be a good idea in a 10L, but maybe a couple of shrimp or an apple snail or two?

Yeah, he needs a heater. And I second the no tank mates. To be honest that is a very small space for a fish and I personally would not keep one in a tank that size. But it's your choice. However, waste will build up very quickly and would be difficult to keep on top of with betta and friends.

Betta are very weak swimmer and will get tossed around. Your best bet would be a sponge filter if you are not looking to change water weekly.

Home bargins tanks are fine for bettas (with an added heater of course) they are roughly 3 gal :good:
