Just An Idea!

Just had an idea (which has probably been thought up millions of times already) but on the whole debate of newcomers into the hobby, I was given wrong advice when I started from an lfs and seems from reading posts on this forum so were many others, 1 week cycle and your ready for fish, I'm guessing its obviously to not put you off fish keeping as I have just read, if you went into a shop and the person advising you said set up a tank and come back in 6-7 weeks would you still buy that tank, (finally here's my point) how hard for an lfs would it be for them to sell mature media? Wouldn't have to be any type of brand but something to kick start your tank for the first few months. This is now where my idea nose dives as I hand it over to the forum and you tell me it's already being done at your lfs or costs to much, but hey just a thought in trying to help newbie keepers and there poor fish.

I like the idea but imagine the difficulty of persuading the average ignorant customer to purchase 2nd hand 'dirty' sponge instead of the brand new one it comes with

Lol yes you dont find out how dirty water changes and general upkeep are until you have spent a months wages on tank filter and fish!

As a newbie, I would have snubbed my nose at an old dirty sponge lol! I remember I used to throw out the old media when it got dirty! Now if I were trying to put a new tank together, I would look at an old mature sponge as a golden egg!
